A kind person named Claire was traveling through and reached out to us almost 2 weeks ago about a scared stray dog that she fed in a gas station late at night on highway 98 between Tonalea and Kaibeto. He was skinny and had a rope tight around his neck and she was very concerned for him. And he was also skittish so she was not able to catch him or remove the rope. She sent the one photo of him at night.

We do not have any volunteers at that location. But within a few days another kind person, Deandra, was able to travel out there after work with a dog crate and food. Deandra determined that he would not go into a dog crate for food. He was too scared and smart. Deandra also got us more photos and gave him food and water.

Dr. Holgate, one of the few veterinarians on the Navajo Nation, had heard about him also and was concerned about him and had joined us in gathering more information and trying to see if we could find other help for him. We unfortunately were not able to find any other help.

A week ago, on the weekend, Tina and Britt were able to travel from eastern Navajo Nation with a humane trap. They were able to trap him. Britt crawled into the trap and removed the rope from his neck. He was frozen in fear but did not growl.

Dr. Holgate’s clinic is closed after Friday till Tuesday. But Dr. Holgate very kindly allowed him to be brought to her after hours. There were a lot of questions about how scared he was and whether he would be handleable.

They were able to muzzle him to treat him. He got named Brad. Dr. Holgate says that Brad is about 2 years old. He got started on all his preventatives and got treated for parasites. He is still very scared.

Aw, lucky dog. I hope he has the wonderful dog life he deserves. What purpose did the dog serve wherever he was? Just to bark?

Thank you to Heather for her kindness in rescuing this very sick kitten, found outside her place in Tuba City, and bringing the kitten to us, earlier this week. The kitten got named Phee. Dr. Holgate thinks that she is about 7 weeks old. She was covered in fleas and ticks and had an extreme respiratory illness.

Phee was not eating (they lose their sense of smell when a respiratory illness is bad) and her temperature was very high and then very low. Thankfully her body was able to respond over a few days of treatment with antibiotics and fluids and she started to eat.

Thank you to the Ark Cat Sanctuary for taking over on her care. The Ark is a fantastic rescue partner who tries to help as many cats and kittens in need as they are able to and we are so grateful for their help. Thank you to all the people helping Phee and giving her a chance. ... See MoreSee Less
