This rescue will go down in the memory books for sure! It started when I was asked to check on a situation involving a momma and possible
pups in a culvert in Kayenta. I went out the next day and found momma but didn’t have a good flashlight on me at the time and was not
able to find her pups. I made sure momma was fed and watered along with Jon Yazzie also feeding her.

The next morning I was able to get a good flashlight and found her pups in a culvert maybe 4-5 feet in. The weather was clear and dry, I had been checking the weather forecast and was very nervous to see that weather would be rolling in. Momma had her pups in a street rain run off culvert so any water from the roadway drains into the culvert. A few hours later we had a storm roll in. I ran down to speedway to check the culvert and our worst fears had come true--the puppies were
drowning in the freezing water. I instantly went into rescue mode with no equipment on me but I knew I had to get the pups out. I tried some of my contacts in Kayenta but everyone was busy.

I then checked with Sam at NAPA and he was able to send Shaun over who assisted me in getting one pup out, even running back to Napa and getting me a flashlight. The other puppies had gone too far back into the culvert for me to reach them. I had to run home, get the one pup as stable as I could considering the pup had taken in quite a bit of
water, and I myself was covered in mud and freezing water. Then I loaded up with more equipment to try and get the rest out.

Thankfully Jon Yazzie was almost back to Kayenta, and able to help. We saw that the pups had gone even further up the culvert. We went back and forth, agonizing, and Jon really pushed for us to get these pups out that night, and safely. Jon’s partner Nadine also showed up and we three started to come up with a plan. We had seen that the puppies were now close to the other end, up towards the street, where the water drains into the culvert, but none of us were able to reach them, even laying down. Well... this sparked a police call about someone laying in the roadway and a very kind Kayenta NPD officer came out to
check on us. We let him know what was going on and he was able to help us shut down a lane on the highway 160 so that we could safely work to get these pups out.

Jon had also texted a few people for help and the Kayenta Fire Department was able to send firefighter Desi out and with that the four of us brainstormed some more . Nadine and Jon were able to get the pups to slightly move up more. Then we tried to get them using
long sections of pvc pipe. Firefighter Desi was able to get one pup out, but the other remaining 5 were just so cold and not active and we could not get them to move. Nadine decided she was fearlessly going to go in and tried to grab them but the culvert was just real tight even as little as she was.

I have had experience crawling into culverts so I went in 35 feet and was able to get in and grab 3 pups at a time into a reusable shopping
bad. Then going out and back in to grab the last 2! Jon ran back to my truck and grabbed the humane dog trap. Momma had been calmly hanging around and watching everything. So, with the help of some rotisserie chicken, we were able to get momma safely trapped and reunited with
her pups!

This really took so many people and a lot of their time to be able to rescue this momma and all 7 of her puppies to keep them from drowning and freezing!

I have rescued puppies from culverts in Kayenta as well, many years ago. Perhaps it is time to put grates over the culverts so we can minimize the excitement in our lives?
